Jackie O

Last weekend, NYC kept reminding me that Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's birthday was looming. She was born on July 28, 1929. I saw Andy Warhol's Nine Jackies at the Met and with further art investigation, discovered you can order some great Jackie O prints from Art.com.

After a wonderful day at the museum we decided to walk through the park and stumbled upon the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir also known as the running track.

I popped into Jonathan Adler and was immediately greeted by this First Lady needlepoint pillow.

Special thanks to Jackie O for having such unbelievably good taste and always reminding me to tone it down so I will be pleased with pictures 20 years from now. It's such an honor to share the birthday month of July with you.

Back from NYC

We had a fabulous weekend in NYC celebrating my birthday. I always do my best to have birthweek instead of just the standard birthday. This illustration is by Patricia van Essche of PVE Design. She has a shop on Esty and does fabulous custom illustrations of anything from wedding monograms to personalized Christmas cards.

Vino Rosina

On the night of JCW's actual birthday we went to Vino Rosina in Harbor East with some friends. I had a Southside at the bar that wasn't too sweet or too sour, it was just right.

Deviled Egg Trio

Quinoa Meatballs

Cheddar-Garlic Grit Cake

Lawyer Liz gave JCW a pair of  Maryland Club Tervis Tumblers...like we had seen at Hunt Cup.

They were even monogrammed on the other side.

For dessert, I surprised the birthday boy with a Smith Island Cake.

You always know that something is good when everyone stops talking.

Special thanks to everyone for coming out for JCW's birthday and to Lawyer Liz for her thoughtful gift...I keep hearing JCW ask "where are my cups" when they are in the dishwasher.

Smith Island Cake

Smith Island cake is the official state dessert of Maryland. What sets this cake apart from other cakes is it's pencil-thin layers combined with a fudgy frosting. There are many different varieties of this multi-layered cake; like Red Velvet, Peanut Butter and Coconut Cream. Smith Island cakes can be ordered online from Smith Island Baking Company and The Original Smith Island Cake Company.

I just recently ordered Lucie Snodgrass's cookbook Dishing Up Maryland. The book touches on the Smith Island cake with a thirteenth-generation Smith Islander named Susan Evans. Susan has been making Smith Island cakes for years.
Lore has it that the original families baked [the first Smith Island cake], although it only had four layers at the time. Over the years the height of the cake grew as the women competed against each other to see who could make the most layers. Today, Smith Island Cakes most commonly vary from eight to eleven layers,, depending on who's making it... Assembling and icing the cake can be tricky and takes years of practice, Evans says. She learned to make the cake from her mother, who learned form her mother's mother, and so on. "It's an island thing," Evans says, shrugging. "They've always been made, and every woman knows how to make one." [Snodgrass 2010: 273]
If you want to take a stab at making a homemade Smith Island cake, this Layer Cake Slicing Kit would certainly help to cut those tricky layers. Here is Mrs. Kitching's Original Recipe for Smith Island cake. Have you had Smith Island cake?

Happy Happy to Me

I was born on 7/18 at 7:18 in the morning...I can't believe yet another year has flown by. JCW gave me a card this morning and he wrote that it almost feels like we are adults...the key word being almost!

Celebrating JCW's Birthday

The weekend of JCW's birthday we had an incredible dinner at Charleston with his family. Charleston is hands down my favorite restaurant in Baltimore. I wore my Jenn dress by Emma Graham and I was thrilled it still fit after that meal.

We decided to let Chef Wolf plan a five course menu for the table which was influenced by the local ingredients that were in season. Each dish was delectable but the Rich Lobster Soup with Curry will forever make my mouth water.

Harbor Fashioneasta II

We made our way back from Patrick Sutton Home in plenty of time to get to our seats and rifle through our gift bags.

EAS & Nelle

It was so much fun watching the high energy fashion show.

I loved these Under Armour sneakers from City Sports.

There were some great looks from Sassanova, Urban Chic and Southmoon Under.

After the show we headed to Wit & Wisdom at the Four Seasons for cocktails.

Special thanks to Stephine Bradshaw for the tickets and for putting on such a exciting event.
