Summer Blooms

One of the many selling points of our house were the beautiful blue hydrangeas plants. I waited all year for them to bloom.  
  
Having the house filled with hydrangeas was such a treat. I am planning on pruning them this summer because they are getting a little too large, any tips?

    We can't grow them here in South Florida, but my mother in law has beautiful ones on her farm in Kentucky and is currently drying some blue ones for me to use in my guest bedroom. I love them!

    Hi!

    I love blue hydrangea's too! However you really need to read up on them before you trim them, you could trim them this year, and not get any blooms, the flowers grow off last years "wood" . Read up about them before you touch them. BHG has some good advice on them. Good luck & enjoy them!

    Always look to Martha....since I started using her techniques I've had the best luck w/ hydrangeas!

    Hydrangeas are my favorite! I have one large plant on the side of my house with many beautiful flowers that last until fall, but the plant at the front of my house never blooms, so strange... I've been enjoying your beautiful wedding photos :-)

    It depends on your variety. I have endless summer that bloom on both old and new wood.

    They are beautiful...lucky you! Mine started blooming in June and then stopped and turned brown. I'm so disappointed, no idea what went wrong!

    I have them in my yard and love them! My Lab uses them in the off season as backscratchers and one year broke the old wood off an entire bush so I had to start over with blooms. I agree with the other readers. One good source is southernliving.com. Enjoy decorating your new home!

    We have lovely hydrangea in Ohio as well! One of my absolute favorites! I would consult with a local landscaper who can take a look at you plant and perhaps carefully trim it back for you. Hydrangea make me so nervous because they are notorious for cycling into a non bloom phase after being cut back.
