I have been wanting an SLR camera for quite some time and I was planning on asking for a
Nikon D3100 for Christmas. Over the weekend JCW had a solo wedding in NYC and this was just the right amount of leverage I had been looking for to get my present early. When I got wind that Nikon had come out with a
Red 3100 I headed straight to Best Buy to check it out...
In true EAS fashion, initially I wanted the colorful version but I decided the black might make me look like more of a legit photographer. In addition, the red would have clashed with my summer wardrobe of Lilly so I went with the black 3100. My point & shoot has served me well and I will probably still be taking it most places because I prefer to carry clutches as well as have a few cocktails! I would love to hear any tips you might have on using SLR cameras. Next on the agenda...look for a cute strap!
Special thanks to JCW for giving into my Christmas in November and being prepared for even more pictures...I love you and my new cammy! xx

I got the D3100 last Christmas. Great camera, you'll love it.
Congratulations! The camera is a gateway to more lenses...
Enjoy your new camera!!! I love my SLR!!!!
Ooh what a fabulous gift! Biggest bit of advice, keep it in a camera bag at all times and never leave it in your car when you just are running to church, grocery store etc. I had my very fancy camera stolen from the back seat of my car while in CHURCH a few years ago. :( I'm sure you will find a fabulous strap, hopefully needle-pointed with nautical flags spelling out something sassy! Merry Thanksgiving to you!
An SRL is on my Christmas list this year, too! Yay for early Santas!
Awesome! Can't wait to see even more pictures. :)
So fun! Love when Christmas comes early!
i just got the nikon d3100 as well, but they didnt have the red option when i got it! I have no clue how to use any of the features haha...lets have a camera party
I love that you selected a color based on your wardrobe - I think the exact same way! Happy shooting! XOXO
Nice camera! We were so close to buying that one, but went with the Canon last minute.
I have the 3100! Love it!
I've had a DSLR for many years and recently upgraded to a more advanced model this summer. But I'm a Canon girl. ;-) Now you need to be prepared to buy more lenses. The camera is probably the cheapest thing you'll get. I suggest getting a prime lens once you get more comfortable with the camera. The kit lens is a good practice lens but there are soooo many better lenses out there. Prime lenses generally have a really low aperture and you'll be amazed at the pictures you'll take.
I have several 'fancy' camera straps. Hands down my favorites are from Jen at Broward Patch. She does an impeccable job and will customize the strap anyway you'd like. This is my favorite that she's made for me:

By no means am I a pro, but feel free to email me if you have any questions or need recommendations for some more stuff. Make sure you get a cute camera bag. Mine is a yellow and blue floral fabric and is monogrammed. I love it!

there are so many great dslr camera straps on etsy! i got mine from a shop on there and love it!
What an awesome gift!! Can't wait to see your camera accessories... like the comments above I have no doubt you'll find an awesome strap.
I bought my wife a Nikon for Christmas last year! Nice gift!
I can not imagine any better pic quality than the ones you post now. You're like the pic taking whisperer...XXOO
ps...I recently passed up a beeeaaaUtiful vintage red Gucci purse for the same exact reason. 'Twas truly one of the prettiest Gooches I'd ever seen but, it wouldn't have matched my heavy in the Lilly summer duds :(
A new camera is on my wishlist too!!
