SlimCado

When I first saw the giant SlimCados at the grocery store I wanted to make sure they weren't genetically modified. SlimCado's have half the fat and 35% less calories then California avocados. I immediately emailed MBW (my on call nutritionist and dear friend) to get the skinny on the SlimCado.

She said the SlimCado is just a Florida avocado (with clever marketing) which is less dense and not as creamy as a Hass avocado. She also told me you can put an avocado in a paper bag with a banana to ripen it quickly...which I never knew. It turns out I am a fan of SlimCados and have been putting them on salads and even eating them plain with sweet vinaigrettes.

How do you eat SlimCados?

My first impression last winter when my friend bought a bag full when in Palm Beach for a holiday was "oh-this cant be good" but this time my instincts failed me.

Thanks for the info! I, too, thought they had to be genetically modified and have steered clear.. perhaps they warrant a try now!

Love them and yes, they are available nearly year round down here in South Florida. We eat them everyway imaginable. One of my faves for lunch (and this is a Body Back lunch) is on a toasted wheat english muffin, smushed and mixed with fresh tomatoe and onion and a tbsp ranch dressing. Yummmm!

Ive seen these, but always opted for the Haas because the slim ones always seem really hard and unripe..do they taste the same?

The SlimCados didn’t take any longer to ripen then regular avocados. They taste very similar to Hass avocados but aren’t as buttery or rich. xx

Never heard of SlimCados and they certainly are massive. May have to try one. I do love avocado on my salads and, of course, guacomole.

I will have to give them a try, I too was concerned about the taste and modification!

I haven't heard of SlimCados, but I will have to check the different kinds at the grocery store to see if mine carries them. My mom said that overseas in the fresh markets the avocados were HUGE, nothing here compares to them. I eat avocados all the time on everything.

Haha, I had no idea they were the same as Florida avocados. I have to say though, nothing beats a Hass!

Thanks for the info! I saw them in the grocery store the other day and "genetically modified" is exactly what came to my mind too. I'm glad you've set me right. I shall just have to try one! :)

Originally you asked what you can do with SlimCados. Turns out you can combine them with peanut butter and even chocolate. Here's a link to these recipes and others. My favorite is the mushroom salad.
